Europe is a treasure trove of breathtaking destinations, but some gems remain tucked away from the crowds, and sometimes you need to mix around with locals, to find out those special hidden places.

Hallstatt, Austria – A Fairytale Village

Why visit: Nestled by a serene lake, Hallstatt offers stunning Alpine views and charming 16th-century architecture. Walking around this place makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale land. We loved visiting in the autumn, as the colors made this hidden gem a unique getaway place for us.

Hidden gems tip: Take the less-traveled hike to Dachstein Ice Caves for a surreal experience. The hike is not that hard, and you can go by with basic gear, but my oh my, are the caves something else. We felt like we were in an extraterrestrial chamber. Loved it!

Alberobello, Italy – The Trulli Capital

Why visit: Famous for its whitewashed cone-shaped houses, Alberobello feels like stepping into a storybook. We would recommend going in the summertime, to take advantage of the lively colors of Alberobello’s nature. You’ll be surrounded by greenery and flowers, and all the fruits and veggies you can imagine, displayed at the local bazaars. Stunning! Evenings are for dinner and wine, and we don’t need to mention that you’ll be trying one of the tastiest wines in your life. That’s a whole other hidden gem post just for wines.

Hidden gems tip: Visit early morning to enjoy the town’s magic without the crowds. It can get super crowdy during summertime, and we hope you see why.

Kotor, Montenegro – A Bay of Beauty

Why visit: A medieval town surrounded by fjord-like landscapes, Kotor is a haven for nature and history lovers. From beautiful mountain views to incredible beaches and one of the tastiest cuisines we’ve ever tried, Kotor really has it all. The old-town vibe throughout this place is unmatched. The people are so friendly and always happy to help with directions or even food recommendations. Make sure you try the cevapi with white sheep cheese and any of the salads on the menu.

Hidden gems tip: Climb the fortress at sunrise for panoramic views of the bay. Also, make sure you take a boat ride around the city – what a vivid imagery!

Sighișoara, Romania – The Birthplace of Dracula

Why visit: This colorful, UNESCO-listed town is rich in Gothic history and legends. The colorful houses around the town will make you forget about Dracula for a second. Then, you get to the castle, and you get the chills just by looking at the grandiose structure. Positioned on a huge rock, the gothic castle is something you won’t see anywhere else. Not much of a hidden gem for this area, as it is one of the most known things to visit – however it is definitely worth the trip if you are in Romania. We got to see a full moon when we went, right above the pointy castle – amazing!

Hidden gems tip: Stroll the cobblestone streets at dusk for an eerie, magical vibe.

Dingle, Ireland – A Coastal Charmer

Why visit: With its dramatic cliffs and warm Irish charm, Dingle offers the perfect mix of nature and culture. Warm up with a pint of beer and head out to the cliffs for a magical experience. Be careful, it can get very windy – but the salty wind only connects you to the magical nature around you. This is the perfect hidden gem for hikers and backpackers as it doesn’t require a lot of budget and it still provides the needed adrenalin and excitement that every travel brings.
